ITU Regional Development opens in Kigali

Rwanda is currently hosting the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Regional Development Forum (RDF) and the Regional Preparatory Meeting (RPM-AFR) for the 2017 World Communication Development Conference (WTDC-2017) for Africa. The two key ITU Africa Region meetings which are taking place at the Kigali Marriott Hotel are bringing together regional and international key sector players in the ICT sector.  The Regional Preparatory Meeting aims at engaging ITU-D membership in the preparations of WTDC-17, scheduled from 9 to 20 October in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to identify issues that need to be addressed to foster the development of telecommunications/ ICTs. On the other hand, the Regional Development Forum will provide an opportunity for high-level dialogue, cooperation and partnerships among telecommunication and ICT policy-makers, regulators, industry, academia, regional and international development agencies and organizations on specific regional telecommunication and ICT issues. Hon. Minister of Youth and ICT Jean Philbert NSENGIMANA said “I would be preaching to the choir if I went into any greater length talking about how ICT will drive each one of the 17 SDGs. Today, I wanted to share a perspective on what in my view Governments should focus on to drive digital economies, which will in turn accelerate the socio-economic transformation that our continent, the Africa we want, needs and deserves. I will support those elements with some examples of the progress that Rwanda has made in this regard. “ I have grouped them into 10 pillars, or 10 T, but look for the T sound at the end of the word, not the beginning. So what should be the role of governments? (Connect, Promote, educate, Demonstrate, regulate, Protect, innovate, invest, Cooperate, quit) Cooperate: The African wisdom says that if you want to go fast you go alone, if you want to go far, you go together. We are here to find a way to create wisdom 2.0 – how to far and fast at the same time. This was the mission that was assigned to Smart Africa and we should all bring our support to the team that is led by our own Dr. Hamadoun Toure, who used to head this prestigious institution that is the ITU. He said. Dr. Lamin Manneh, the ONE UN Resident Coordinator said: “The ITU Regional meetings is an opportunity to discuss partnerships and resource mobilisation, but above all contemplate on the future of ICT in the region. The role of ICT in contributing to the advancement of the global agenda, the Sustainable development goals cannot be over-emphasised.”
